Purchased a property or aiming to install a new roof on an older home? If you’re new to Colorbond, you might not know the ins and outs of the warranty, and that’s okay!
Colorbond steel is incredibly strong, so you might think to yourself, “is the warranty important?” the answer is yes! No matter how durable your roofing is, you need to know how a warranty will affect you and what to do if something goes wrong.
This article will cover everything you need to know about Colorbond warranties, including types of warranties, the nitty gritty details, and how to make a claim.
What is a Colorbond Warranty?

Whenever you buy a Colorbond or Zincalume steel product (such as gutters or downpipes), it is always made and backed by BlueScope, which is Australia’s largest manufacturer.
A Colorbond warranty covers the durability and performance of the steel and its paint finish, assuring you as a customer that the product is free from defects and performs as expected for the expected timeframe. Let’s take a look at what a warranty covers in detail.
- It covers corrosion by weathering in natural elements for a specified period, often up to 30 years.
- Covers paint performance, such as flaking and peeling, for up to 20 years.
- Covers the materials used in Colorbond steel products.
- Covers performance, so the end product will perform as expected for a specified period.
However, certain things must be met to keep the warranty valid. This includes:
- Proper installation, as a warranty, might not cover damage caused by incorrect installation.
- Regular cleaning and maintenance, including unwashed areas by rainfall such as under the eaves.
- The warranty could exclude damage caused by misuse, accidents, or negligence.
How Do You Apply For a Warranty?

To start or activate a warranty, let BlueScope know if you are a builder or an installer, or own the home or building.
For home and building owners
Once a builder who has installed the product has applied for the warranty, you will be sent an activation code to complete the process and take ownership of the warranty.
If a builder has not applied for the warranty, you can apply for it yourself. All you need to do is supply some product and project information. Check out the applicational checklist for guidance on how to activate your warranty.
For builders and installers
You can only apply for a warranty on behalf of a customer if you’re planning to install the product within the next 18 months. Refer to the BlueScope checklist for the details you will need.
An activation code is shared with you and the customer once you complete your part of the application. The customer can then use this to finalise the warranty and assign ownership to themselves.
